Xanthi is a Thracian city in Northern Greece, built between Lake Vistonida and the Nestos River. It is first mentioned under its current name in the late 8th century AD.
During the Byzantine era, Xanthi became a commercial and cultural crossroad between the East and the West. When the region was occupied by the Ottomans, the city became a refuge for the Christian populations of the surrounding settlements.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the major income of the citizens of Xanthi was coming from tobacco cultivation and process. The variety of Xanthi’s tobacco was one of the finest and its reputation extended the limits of the Ottoman Empire and the Sultan. The mansions of the old town reflect the wealth of that period.
