The island of Rhodes is in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The first inhabitants founded their settlements in 4000 BC and the first cities were built in 1100 BC. It was the sunniest place in Europe and the residents had created a statue to honor the God of Sun. This statue had been named “Colossus of Rhodes” and was included in the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.
In 1300 AD, the order of the Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Saint John moved and settled in Rhodes. The fairytale of the former crusaders that lived under a code of chivalry is still visible in the impressive palaces and temples. The old town of Rhodes preserves the heritage of the Knights of Saint John and is listed on UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The island’s nature is a mixture of lush forests, cool and thermal springs, long beaches. The old settlements preserve the traditional lifestyle, while the castle and the archeological sites are constant reminders of the glorious past.
The dramatic landscape was selected as a filming location, and many Hollywood stars have visited Rhodes. Gregory Peck, Sophia Loren, Anthony Queen, Roger Moore, Anthony Hopkins, Kenneth Branagh were just some of them.
