Thassos is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea. The history of Thassos begins in prehistoric times. The first settlements were founded in the 7th century BC. It became an important city-state in antiquity until the Roman period, mainly due to its gold and marble mines.
The thousand-year-old dust of the marbles created turquoise waters and dazzling white beaches surrounded by pine tree forests. Some of the beaches still host archaeological sites, like the one at Aliki. On Metallia Beach, there are remains of the mines and the iron processing factory that stopped its operation in the 60s.
There are dozens of villages, with the oldest and more traditional ones located on the mountains for protection by the pirates. The residents of Thassos preserve the island’s historical memory and traditions. Religious feasts at the old churches and monasteries, folklore tradition at the settlements, local gastronomy based on honey, olive oil and wine, the basic agricultural products.
