Filming location for “Mama Mia!”.

Skopelos is an island on the Sporades Island cluster, second on the row from the mainland. It is called “green & blue” due to the lush landscape and the blue beaches. Recently, Skopelos is just known as the “Mama Mia” island.

The history of Skopelos dates to ancient times. According to mythology it was founded by Staphylos, the son of God Dionysus. During the Byzantine period the island was designated as a place of exile. The Venetians occupied the island in the 13th century and restored the old castle of Peparithos, the remains of which are still preserved.

The town of Skopelos was declared a traditional settlement in 1978. Indeed, the whitewashed houses with tile roofs and blooming bougainvillea built on the sides of the narrow streets are forming a lovely settlement. All over the island there are monasteries and chapels with breathtaking views, such as the iconic Agios Ioannis, the Mama Mia wedding church.

Skopelos has three ports: the main port of Chora – Skopelos Town, the port of Glossa and the port of Agnontas. They connect the island with the mainland or used as hubs for the daily cruises to Skiathos, Alonissos or the tour of Skopelos.
