Part of the Sporades complex of islands in the middle of the Aegean Sea, Skiathos is a mixture of lush pine forests and light-blue beaches, a blend of tradition and sophistication.
Skiathos is known by its current name since ancient times. Throughout their long history, the inhabitants of the island have been struggling to avoid the enemy attacks, sometime successfully and others not.
The Venetians captured the island in the 13th century. They constructed the fortress of Bourtzi over the old port, to protect the island from the pirates. Outside the fortified hill, the town of Skiathos was built over the ruins of the ancient settlement offering stunning views from the clock tower or the castle.
The old town is a traditional settlement with a population of approximately 5.000 people. Old churches, elegant mansions, narrow streets, little shops, cool bars and restaurants are expanded on both sides of the main Papadiamantis Street.
All around Skiathos there are beautiful sandy beaches and quiet bays surrounded by rocky formations, accessible by car or by boat. From Skiathos there are organized daily cruises to the islands of Skopelos and Alonissos or boat trips to the island’s beaches.
