Pelion is a peninsula in central-eastern Greece, close to the port city of Volos. Mount Pelion dominates the upper side of the peninsula while the beaches stretch along the Pagasetic Gulf on one side and the Aegean Sea on the other. The mainland is covered by dash forests and dense vegetation.
No wonder why the Olympian Gods selected it as their summer residence and the Centaurs as their home, according to the Greek mythology. Although the area was inhabited since prehistoric times, the villages of Pelion developed in the 18th century. The impressive stone mansions, the picturesque squares and the cobblestone streets are still preserved.
Along the coastlines of Pelion there are seaside villages and mountainous traditional settlements, just a few kilometers away from the dazzling blue beaches.
On the Aegean Sea the scenery is more dramatic. Some of the most beautiful beaches are: Mylopotamos, Horefto, Agios Ioannis, Damouchari, Papa Nero and Tsagarada. This part of Pelion has been one of the locations of the “Mama Mia” film where hundreds of locals were participating.
The side of the Pagasetic Gulf presents seaside scenic villages and quiet beaches such as: Kala Nera, Afissos, Chorto, Milina, Trikeri. The nearby villages host some interesting museums and old churches. Palaio Trikeri is a small island 5 minutes away from Trikeri beach and very much worth visiting.
