The imposing mountain is located in Northern Greece, southwest of Thessaloniki, above the Aegean Sea. Surrounded by myths and legends, Mount Olympus is considered the “holy grail” for mountain climbers and nature lovers.
According to Greek mythology, the mighty Zeus had his throne on the highest peak “Mytikas”, which rises at 2.917 meters altitude. Mount Olympus has been designated natural park since 1938, preserving about 1.800 species of flora and fauna. In 1981, UNESCO declared Olympus a Biosphere Reserve.
Litohoro is a traditional town on the slopes of the mountain, the gateway for mountainous adventures and cool holidays close to the Olympus Riviera. The town has a long seafaring history, presented in the Maritime Museum of Litohoro. In 17 kilometers distance, hidden in dense forests, lies the Old Monastery of Saint Dionysios, founded in 1542 and destroyed by the Nazis in 1943.
The region of Pieria where Mount Olympus is located, has a long history and sites that date back to the neolithic era, such as: The Archaeological Park of Dion where Alexander the Great sacrificed to the Gods before his campaign to Asia, ancient Pydna – the location of the last battle between Greeks and Romans, the medieval castle of Platamon, the picturesque villages.
