Kavala is located in Northern Greece, nestled between the slopes of the surrounding hills and the northern coast of the Aegean Sea.
The first settlement was founded in the late 7th century BC. Due to its harbor, geographic position and proximity to the gold-bearing Mount Pangaion, the city became an important commercial and cultural center during the era of King Philip II – father of Alexander the Great, and a major port of the Roman Empire. In 45 AD, Apostle Paul visited Kavala on his way to Philippi and founded the first Christian community in Europe.
The archaeological site and museum of Philippi (UNESCO), the Holy Baptistery of Saint Lydia, the Roman aqueduct – landmark of the city of Kavala, are reminders of the city’s ancient past.
The Byzantine era and the Ottoman rule, gifted the city with important sites, such as the Castle, the Imaret, the Mohammed Ali Museum and the old town.
The 20th century was the golden age of Kavala. The booming of the tobacco industry and the population growth formed an economically prosperous middle class. The thematic Tobacco Museum and the neoclassical mansions in the city center are witnesses to this period.
Today, Kavala is a picturesque walkable city with plenty of activity options nearby: local wineries, long sandy beaches, ancient sites and getaway destinations such as the island of Thassos.
