Kastoria is one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Greece. It stretches along Lake Orestiada and takes its name after the beavers of the lake. Traces of human habitation date back to the Neolithic era.
The city was conquered by the Romans and flourished as a cultural, religious and commercial center during the Byzantine era. The heyday of this period is visible in the forty well-preserved Byzantine churches.
For more than five centuries, the economy of Kastoria was thriving due to the fur manufacturing and trading. There are plenty of mansions from the 17th and 18th century, built according to the traditional Macedonian architecture and decorated by specialized craftsmen.
The traditional quarters with the cobblestoned routes and the old churches, the thematic museums, the round of the lake which is considered one of the best driving or walking experiences in Greece and the local food and wine, compose an authentic travel experience.
