Alonissos is the center of the “National Marine Park” whose purpose is to protect, conserve and manage the natural environment of Alonissos and the nearby islands and islets. The park is a natural reserve for a series of flora and fauna species as well as monuments of historical and cultural interest. It is also home to the Mediterranean seal “Monachus-Monachus”, one of the largest species of seals in the world.
In 2021, the first Greek underwater museum officially opened in Alonissos. The museum futures a shipwreck of the 5th century and thousands of amphorae that the ship was carrying.
Alonissos has some beautiful settlements with the most important being Patitiri as the island’s main port and capital, and Chora – the traditional village that used to be the old capital. Swimming, hiking, diving, boating and relaxing are some of the activities that the island is known for.
