Naxos is the largest island of Cyclades, covering an area of 430 square kilometers. It lies in the center of the Archipelago.
Blessed by the sun and Apollo God, Naxos in antiquity was visible from afar due to its landmark, the huge gate (Portara) of Apollo’s temple. The significance of Naxos in the ancient world, reflects on the remarkable findings, such as the 10,7-meter-tall statue “Kouros” (from the 7th c. BC), as well as the exhibit collections in the Archaeological Museum.
Above Naxos Town is the Venetian Castle of the 12th century. The Chora, as it is called, is a medieval labyrinth of cobblestone alleys, whitewashed houses and arcades. More than forty villages and settlements are spread all over the island. An extended network of 30 hiking trails connects the island’s sandy beaches or the traditional inland villages, such as Apiranthos, Halki, Filoti, Potamia.
Many areas in Naxos, including coastal zones, wetlands, Mount Zas, lagoons and fields, are protected by the NATURA 2000 European network. The island’s flora consists of approximately 1.000 species, while 200 bird species have been recorded. Due to its fertile soil, Naxos produces a variety of agricultural products, such as olive oil, honey, potatoes, fruits and twelve kinds of cheese.
From Naxos, daily excursions or cruises to the nearby islands of Koufonisia, Iraklia, Mykonos or Paros, can be organized.
